Commentary
When it comes to single-vehicle wrecks, people have a bad habit of just assuming the driver must have done something wrong. But until there's been a careful inspection of the crash scene and the vehicle, it's important to avoid jumping to conclusions. There's no telling when something unusual or unavoidable might lead to a crash.
Consider, for example, the infamous GM ignition switch defect. This was a defect found years back which would sometimes result in a vehicle losing power mid-drive. This would leave drivers without vital systems, such as anti-lock braking, power steering, and even airbags while going highway speeds. All said and done, this defect killed over a hundred people, yet the public didn't know about it for years. It took dedicated independent accident reconstructions to finally bring the issue to light and hold the manufacturer to account.
To be clear, I'm not suggesting a defect led to this crash, but it is an example of why ruling out all possible factors is so important. One way or the other, the evidence needs to speak for itself. Having done this job for over 30 years, I've found time and time again that simply getting people the answers they deserve is the best path forward, regardless of what that path may entail.
