Ellis County, TX — April 13, 2024, Jaelan Tapia was fatally injured due to a car accident at around 3:00 a.m. along Interstate 45.

Commentary by Attorney Michael Grossman
There isn't much information available concerning what happened here. Was there no lighting here? Was the victim's car not visible? Was the approaching driver on their phone or going too fast? Did this involve a driver illegally over-served by an alcohol provider? Is there something inherently dangerous about how this road is constructed or maintained?
Likely or not, there are all kinds of possible factors that can lead to an accident like this. If authorities don't take the time to consider anything beyond the more obvious possible factors, they're bound to leave the victim's loved ones with unanswered questions. That simply wouldn't be right, yet I hear from families all the time who feel authorities dropped the ball and left them in the dark. Authorities are sometimes thorough enough to get clear answers, but it's a shame how often people only get the full story when they take steps to see independent investigators look into the situation more thoroughly.
