Commentary by Attorney Michael Grossman
I've handled serious fatal accident cases all over the country, and one thing remains consistent from state to state: it's best to take early details with a few grains of salt. That's especially true when it comes to single-vehicle wrecks. I've worked with countless families concerned that authorities treated their accident as a low priority and moved on without getting any clear answers. Unfortunately, they're often right.
Ultimately, authorities have limited resources and manpower, and they tend to see something like a single-vehicle wreck as low on their list of concerns. As a result, even skilled and dedicated officers may not have the right tools or enough time to get clear answers. Was there a vehicle defect? Did a tire blow out? Was the victim working for an employer who overworked the victim or had them operating a poorly maintained vehicle? Was there another driver who left the scene? Did a medical emergency occur? Does this road have insufficient signage or known issues?
If authorities can answer these kinds of questions, it can reassure a victim's loved ones that they're getting the truth about what happened. But in those times where the answers don't add up or leave nagging concerns and doubts, it's only reasonable families would seek out independent professionals who can give things a second look and make sure nothing important slipped through the cracks. I see no reason why this crash would be an exception to that.
