Commentary by Attorney Michael Grossman
It would surprise people how often single-vehicle accidents get brushed aside and treated as a low priority. Authorities are certainly capable of conducting thorough, in-depth investigations, but they can miss important details if officers aren't given the time and tools needed to really dig into things properly.
Did the vehicle have a defect? Did a tire blow out? Are there issues with the road itself? Is there a lack of signage or lighting that led to the crash? Was there another reckless driver who left the scene? Did authorities pull electronic data from the vehicle or the driver's cellphone? Did they look at nearby businesses or residences for security cameras which may have seen the accident?
Likely or not, these are the kinds of factors I reliably expect to see independent investigators come up with. Sometimes, they can confirm that authorities already got all the facts and did good investigations. Other times, they show authorities missed important details. It wouldn't be too unusual if there was more to this story, as well.
