Commentary by Attorney Michael Grossman
When it comes to single-vehicle accidents, it might surprise people just how complex investigations can be. They're simple just because one vehicle is involved, yet a lot of authorities will treat them as a low priority. This can leave victims and families feel like no one is looking to tell their story fairly. In my experience, a few key questions can help people identify early on how their investigations are being handled.
Are investigators taking the time and using the right tools to fully understand what happened? Single-vehicle crashes can stem from a variety of factors, including road hazards, mechanical failures, or sudden evasive maneuvers. If authorities treat the case as routine and don’t conduct a detailed reconstruction, important details could be missed.
Have they examined the vehicle for potential vehicle defects? A sudden loss of control could point to brake malfunctions, steering defects, or even tire blowouts. Additionally, if seatbelts or airbags didn’t function properly, injuries may have been far worse than they should have been. Were investigators thorough in inspecting the vehicle before critical evidence was lost?
Did they collect all available electronic evidence? Modern vehicles store key data on speed, braking, and steering inputs before a crash. GPS records, cellphone activity, and security or traffic camera footage could also provide valuable context. Have authorities worked to secure this information before it disappears?
If it seems authorities can address all of these concerns directly, it's likely they're doing everything they can to get clear answers. Otherwise, if it seems authorities are coming up short, that can be a sign that the accident needs another set of eyes looking things over.
