Commentary by Attorney Michael Grossman
After a serious crash, victims and families deserve clear answers, but authorities don’t always conduct the thorough investigations people expect. That’s why asking key questions can help ensure all possible factors are considered.
Did investigators take the time and use the right tools to analyze the crash? Multi-vehicle collisions require careful reconstruction, including an assessment of road conditions, visibility, and driver actions. If authorities rushed their work, critical details may have been overlooked.
Did they check for potential vehicle defects? Brake malfunctions, steering issues, or tire failures could have contributed to the crash. Additionally, if airbags or seatbelts failed, injuries may have been worse than necessary. Were the vehicles properly inspected?
Did they secure all available electronic evidence? Data from the vehicles’ Engine Control Modules (ECMs), GPS records, cellphone activity, and any nearby security footage could provide key insights. Did investigators act quickly to preserve this information before it was lost?
If authorities can show they have clear answers, that's good news for the victims and families. If there aren't clear answers, steps can be taken to have a second set of eyes pick up the slack. The sooner these questions are asked, the better.
