Nirav Rana, 2 Injured in Car Accident in Austin, TX
Austin, TX — March 28, 2025, Nirav Rana and two others were injured following a car accident that happened around 2:18 a.m. on Interstate 35.
Investigators said in preliminary statements that the accident happened at the intersection of I-35 and William Cannon Drive.

According to officials, 28-year-old Nirav Rana was in a Ford Mustang going northbound along the interstate. A Nissan Versa going eastbound through the intersection reportedly was fleeing from authorities at the time. In doing so, it crashed into Rana's vehicle.
Due to the accident, Nirav Rana was left with unspecified injuries. Two people in the Nissan had injuries, as well. At this time, authorities allege that the Nissan driver was under the influence of alcohol. Additional details are unclear right now.
Commentary
Anytime alcohol is mentioned as a factor in a crash, people tend to think that makes the situation open-and-shut. While drunk driving is obviously wrong and calls for consequences, the drunk drivers may not be the only ones who need to be called out. In Texas, alcohol providers often contribute to serious accidents, and they, too, need to be investigated.
Simply put, it's unlawful for alcohol providers to serve people who are obviously intoxicated. If an establishment does so, and that results in people being injured, the alcohol providers can be held responsible for that. But if authorities spend all of their time focusing on the crash itself, they can easily overlook this.
I've handled hundreds of cases involving negligent alcohol providers. I can't count how often authorities simply overlooked them and moved on unless there was pressure for the family to conduct further investigations. Perhaps authorities here have been more thorough and looked into where the alleged drunk driver may have been drinking. If that required a second set of eyes more experienced with going after bars and other establishments, though, it wouldn't be that unusual.
