Commentary
If these initial claims are true, then it seems clear that a driver made a mistake here, and serious injuries followed suit. But that doesn't necessarily mean all of this is open-and-shut. Time after time, I get cases where authorities came to a quick conclusion, then moved on without a second thought. This sometimes results in important extenuating circumstances slipping through the cracks.
For example, why is it that only the victim was injured here? Generally, when similar-sized vehicles collide, there are going to be at least comparable outcomes for those involved. When only one person is seriously injured though, it suggest the possibility that something which protected the uninjured drivers failed to protect the injured one. Did authorities examine the victim's vehicle for potential defects? Did the airbags go off? Did their seatbelt lock properly?
Likely or not, these are the kinds of details a proper investigations should be able to catch. That's why it's important victims and families take note when it seems statements from authorities are shallow. It could be a sign they moved on before thoroughly investigating the crash, and that could mean there's more to the story that needs attention.
