Commentary
In my experience, when a passenger vehicle and a large commercial truck collide, it's usually the passenger vehicle driver who comes out worse for wear. Even a large pickup like a Tundra is going to be far outsized by a cement truck. That makes me wonder if authorities have taken the time to inspect the cement truck for any potential defects.
Defects may not be all that common, and the events following the initial collision may have been severe enough that the victim suffering fatal injuries wasn't an unusual outcome. Sometimes, though, inspections can show the truck wasn't structurally unsound, that it didn't have proper working airbags or seatbelts, or that it otherwise had hazards that made fatal injuries more likely than they should have been.
Frankly, that's not the sort of thing authorities usually look into. Understandably, there tends to be more focus on blaming an individual driver. But I'm not bringing up the possibility of a defect to shift blame or excuse any mistakes. On the contrary, if there's evidence to show that the victim should have been able to survive this crash, the family deserves to know that those issues are being addressed just as much as any wrongdoing that led to the crash in the first place.
