Commentary by Attorney Michael Grossman
When a crash involves multiple vehicles and someone is seriously hurt, it's easy to focus on a single reported cause—like failure to yield—and move on. But surface-level details rarely tell the whole story. Serious collisions deserve a closer look at what really happened and why.
1. Did investigators have the time, equipment, and training to fully analyze the crash?
A four-vehicle collision requires more than just noting who entered the intersection first. Reconstructing each vehicle’s movement, speed, and point of impact takes specialized tools and training. Without that kind of detailed work, the story can be incomplete—or even inaccurate.
2. Was any vehicle inspected for possible mechanical issues?
If one vehicle didn’t yield as expected, it’s fair to ask whether it was a result of driver behavior or a mechanical problem. Faulty brakes, steering issues, or signal malfunctions don’t always leave obvious signs and can go unnoticed without a proper inspection.
3. Was all electronic data from the vehicles collected and preserved?
In crashes with multiple vehicles, data from onboard systems—like speed, braking, and steering input—can help confirm what each driver did in the seconds before impact. Phone use, GPS history, and traffic camera footage can also support or challenge initial claims. But this information must be gathered quickly to be useful.
In my more than 30 years of experience handling serious car accident cases, I've seen time and time again that people with the most evidence possible telling their story will generally have the best outcomes. So as open-and-shut as these initial details may seem, they may only be scratching the surface.
Takeaways:
- A multi-vehicle crash like this demands more than a basic report to understand the full picture.
- Mechanical problems may have played a role and should be ruled out with proper inspection.
- Electronic data could clarify critical details—if it was preserved in time.
