Commentary by Attorney Michael Grossman
Following any serious car accident, it's important that victims and families know their needs are being considered and that they're being treated fairly. It's one of the most common concerns I get calls about. So how do people know they're going to get that fair treatment? Well, one of the simplest ways is to give authorities a chance to explain their actions.
If authorities can show that they're looking into a crash from all angles, and they're letting the evidence speak for itself, then that's generally a good sign that they're handling the accident delicately and focusing on getting answers. However, if answers aren't adding up, if it seems authorities are more focused on looking for someone to blame, or if they just don't have any satisfactory answers at all, that can be a sign that the crash needs to be in the hands of independent investigators.
In other words, folks should ask themselves: Am I comfortable with the answers I'm getting from police? If the answer is yes, then that's good. If the answer is no, then there are other avenues to explore.
