Alfredo Sedillo Killed in Work Accident in San Antonio, TX
San Antonio, TX — August 20, 2024, Alfredo Sedillo sustained fatal injuries as the result of a work accident at around 4:30 p.m. off Cagnon Road.
The Occupational Safety and Health Administration released an investigation summary about the incident. It reportedly happened off the corner of Cagnon Road and F.M. 143.
According to OSHA, 43-year-old Alfredo Sedillo was working as a mechanic at the time. The investigation summary says that Sedillo was working on a backhoe at the time when he reportedly went home feeling unwell. Ultimately, Sedillo passed out and ended up dying due to heat stroke.
OSHA alleges that the employer at the site "had not provided water for employees and did not monitor fluid intake throughout the day." Their report lists three alleged citations, two of which are labeled as "serious." No further information is available right now.
Commentary
An employer providing water for workers during August in Texas is just about the most basic, common sense thing anyone could do. The fact that allegedly didn't happen here raises serious red flags. In my experience handling work fatality cases, if an employer doesn't do something as basic as provide water for employees, there's a decent chance they've cut corners all over the job site. There needs to be a thorough investigation here not just to get this man's loved ones the answers they deserve, but also there may need to be steps taken to make sure other workers aren't being put in danger by this employer.
