Woman Injured in Alleged Drunk Driver Accident on F.M. 116 in Coryell County, TX
Coryell County, TX — December 30, 2024, a woman was injured following an alleged drunk driver accident at around 8:17 p.m. along F.M. 116.
According to preliminary information about the accident, it happened near the intersection of F.M. 116 and Elijah Road north of Copperas Cove.
Investigators said that a 39-year-old woman was in a Toyota Rav4 going northbound along F.M. 116. A Dodge Ram also reportedly going northbound allegedly failed to maintain its lane, and the two vehicles collided. As a result of the collision, the Toyota driver sustained serious injuries.
According to officials, the driver of the Dodge was allegedly under the influence of alcohol. Authorities recommended charges for intoxication assault. No further information is available.
Commentary
If the allegations here are true, then a driver possibly being charged for intoxication assault is quite serious. But that may not be the end of the story. Have authorities also looked into where the alleged alcohol came from?
Under Texas law, alcohol providers, such as bars, restaurants, or other venues, have a legal responsibility to avoid serving alcohol to someone who is obviously intoxicated. If the driver of the Dodge was over-served before this crash, the establishment that provided the alcohol may share responsibility for the for the resulting accident.
Too often, this goes overlooked by the authorities. Out of hundreds of cases I've handled against negligent alcohol providers, few were on the authorities' radar until after the victims and families sought out our help. There were even times we handed evidence over to the authorities, and they still didn't make an effort to pursue their own investigations. Authorities here may have been more thorough, but there's nothing in these initial reports to suggest that yet.
