Commentary
There is some lack of clarity in these initial reports, and they make me wonder how careful authorities are being with their investigations here. To be put it simply, a vehicle on the wrong side of the road brings up very serious possible concerns that are less likely in situations where a vehicle just crosses the center line suddenly. It's important to draw that distinction early on.
In situations where a driver doesn't know what side of the road they're on, alcohol or some other intoxicant is usually involved. Did authorities test for that here? Was this driver on their way from a local establishment after being unlawfully over-served?
Conversely, a vehicle crossing the center line can bring up other concerns. Did a tire blow out? Were they on their phone? Does their vehicle have some kind of defect? Did poor road conditions or debris in the road contribute to the crash?
While people generally assume authorities ask all these questions, that isn't always true. Officers don't always have the time, tools, or training to conduct exhaustive accident reconstructions. As a result, families can end up with unanswered questions unless there are independent investigators catching important details that may have otherwise slipped through the cracks.
