Commentary
After crashes where multiple people are hurt, I often get the same question. "How can I make sure I can tell my side of the story?" Generally speaking, the more evidence, the better. But simply waiting around for authorities to get that evidence can end with incomplete or inaccurate reports if authorities didn't see the crash as a high priority. That's why it's helpful for people to consider a few key questions.
Did investigators take the time and use the right tools to fully analyze the crash? Intersection collisions require careful examination of vehicle positioning, traffic signals, and potential evasive actions. If authorities didn’t conduct a full reconstruction, they may have overlooked key details that could clarify what happened.
Did they consider whether a vehicle defect contributed to the crash? Mechanical failures—such as brake malfunctions, steering issues, or faulty acceleration—could have played a role. Additionally, if seatbelts or airbags didn’t function properly, injuries may have been more severe than necessary. Were both vehicles thoroughly inspected before key evidence was lost?
Did they secure all available electronic evidence? The vehicles’ Engine Control Modules (ECMs) may contain crucial data on speed, braking, and steering inputs before impact. GPS records, cellphone data, and any nearby security or traffic camera footage could also provide valuable insight. Did authorities take steps to preserve this information before it disappeared?
If authorities can't provide clear answers, it's likely a sign their efforts were insufficient, and there may need to be secondary investigations to make sure nothing important slipped through the cracks. Otherwise, if folks are satisfied with the answers authorities provide, then it can be a significant peace of mind as they work toward getting a resolution.
