Commentary
After any fatal accident, the biggest challenge isn’t just knowing what happened, but understanding why. That’s where the right questions make all the difference.
Were investigators thorough?
Not every department has the tools, training, or time to do a deep dive. A careful reconstruction should include mapping the scene, reviewing damage, and looking at vehicle movements—not just a quick report.
Could a vehicle defect have contributed?
Crashes aren’t always the result of driver error. Brake failures, tire blowouts, or malfunctioning airbags and seatbelts can all play a role in whether a crash occurs—or whether it turns fatal.
Was electronic evidence collected?
Modern vehicles record critical data through their Engine Control Modules (ECMs), and traffic cameras or cellphone records can reveal important context. This information is often time-sensitive and must be preserved early.
Asking these questions doesn’t just fill in the gaps—it ensures families can have confidence that the full story is being uncovered, not just a partial one.
