Commentary by Attorney Michael Grossman
People often see claims of someone being on the wrong side of the road, and they jump to conclusions. Like any crash, however, it's important to consider extenuating possible factors. This may have been the result of fatigue, poor lighting, a lack of proper signage, or just a mistake from someone unfamiliar with the area.
Is it more likely for a crash with details like this to involve alcohol? Of course—in fact it's the common result of people unlawfully over-served by bars or other alcohol providers, meaning there could be a local establishment responsible for contributing to this deadly crash. Is that something authorities have on their radar?
I bring this up not to add to any speculation but rather to highlight that official investigations aren't always motivated to actually get the full story. While families are left wondering what happened, authorities sometimes just want to place blame. By demanding more thorough investigations, however, there can be steps to push assumptions aside and actually let the evidence speak for itself. Whatever story that may tell, the important thing is for the victims and families involved to know they're not being left in the dark.
