Canutillo Man Injured in Truck Accident on Desert Boulevard in El Paso County, TX
El Paso County, TX — September 25, 2024, a Canutillo man was injured as the result of a truck accident at around 9:34 p.m. along North Desert Boulevard.
Authorities said in preliminary statements that the accident took place at the intersection of the northbound I-10 frontage road and Coach Road, just north of Canutillo.
According to officials, a 22-year-old Canutillo man was on a bicycle at the time traveling southbound along the frontage road. At Coach, it appears a northbound truck was making a right turn. The two vehicles collided as a result.
Due to the collision, the cyclist sustained serious injuries. There were no other reported injuries. Right now, no further information can be confirmed.

One of my concerns in a situation like this is that people sometimes jump to conclusions with people on bicycles. There's a lot of bias, and people sometimes think that things are all about who had the right-of-way. That's an important detail, but it's also important to know how reasonably avoidable that accident was.
For example, if a bicycle is equipped with proper visibility gear, such as flashing lights, then most reasonably prudent drivers would be able to see them. If someone is visible and avoidable, drivers have a responsibility to do so, regardless of who has the right-of-way. However, if a bicycle isn't clearly visible, and a driver is being safe and attentive but still can't avoid a collision, it would be unreasonable for them to be responsible.
How things went down here isn't entirely clear from the preliminary reports alone. Maybe authorities have been more thorough behind the scenes, but it wouldn't be unusual if more thorough independent investigations showed there was more to the story.
