Commentary by Attorney Michael Grossman
When a vehicle leaves the roadway without any outside contact, it’s easy to assume the cause is obvious. But single-vehicle crashes often raise as many questions as they answer, and the answers don’t always lie in plain sight. Looking closer is the only way to separate assumption from fact.
Did investigators take a deep enough look at the scene?
Even without another driver involved, there’s still a story in the details. Mapping the truck’s path, measuring its speed through skid marks or roadway evidence, and considering the driver’s actions before the crash can all reveal critical information. These steps require training and time, and not every investigation team brings the same level of experience to the table. If those steps aren’t taken, key insights into why the truck left the road could be lost.
Was a vehicle defect part of the equation?
Sometimes a crash that looks like driver error can be traced back to the machine itself. Brake failures, steering issues, or suspension problems can all cause sudden loss of control. A careful inspection of the pickup’s mechanical systems is the only way to know for certain whether a defect played a role. Without it, there’s a real risk of drawing the wrong conclusion.
Has all available electronic data been collected?
Modern vehicles often store valuable clues in their onboard systems, including speed, throttle position, and braking just before impact. Paired with possible phone records or nearby camera footage, that data can clarify whether the driver attempted to slow down, swerved, or experienced an unexpected loss of control. This kind of evidence is time-sensitive and can vanish if not secured promptly.
Asking these questions ensures the investigation moves beyond what’s visible at first glance. The truth often lives in the hidden details, and only a full, careful review can bring them to light.
Key takeaways:
- Even single-vehicle crashes require detailed scene reconstruction to uncover the full story.
- Mechanical problems should be ruled out through a complete vehicle inspection.
- Electronic data from the vehicle and nearby devices can answer critical pre-crash questions.
