Commentary by Attorney Michael Grossman
When a heavy truck goes off the road on a curve, it’s easy to assume the driver simply misjudged the turn. But serious crashes rarely happen without a deeper cause, and unless the investigation digs into the details, important answers can slip away.
1. Did the authorities thoroughly investigate the crash?
A curve-related crash should prompt a careful look at the roadway evidence. Did investigators examine tire marks to see whether the driver attempted braking or steering correction? Was the truck’s path mapped to determine if it drifted gradually or suddenly veered? These details can help distinguish between driver error and an unexpected problem. Without that work, the explanation risks being oversimplified.
2. Has anyone looked into the possibility that a vehicle defect caused the crash?
The Ford F-350 is a powerful vehicle, but like any machine, it can fail. A brake malfunction, steering issue, or tire blowout could make controlling a truck of that size nearly impossible, especially on a curve. If the vehicle wasn’t thoroughly inspected before being removed, the chance to identify a mechanical failure may already be gone—leaving unanswered whether the driver or the truck itself was at fault.
3. Has all the electronic data relating to the crash been collected?
Modern trucks often carry event data recorders that capture speed, braking, and steering inputs just before a crash. Phones, GPS devices, or nearby surveillance cameras might also provide valuable context. If investigators don’t secure that data quickly, the true sequence of events could remain hidden.
Every crash leaves behind a trail of evidence, but whether that evidence gets preserved determines if we’re left with clear answers or lingering questions.
Takeaways:
- It’s not yet clear whether investigators reconstructed the F-350’s movement through the curve.
- A possible brake, tire, or steering failure may not have been ruled out.
- Electronic crash data and digital records could hold key insights if collected in time.
