Commentary by Attorney Michael Grossman
While the cause of the crash has yet to be confirmed, authorities mentioned looking into alcohol as a possible factor. That could simply be due to the fact it's common at this time of night. It's when many people are coming from local bars after a night out, so it would be irresponsible not to consider it. But if it was a factor here, it's important to know whether or not the driver unlawfully over-served.
As much as people talk about punishing drunk drivers, it's also important to consider the victims. If they were hurt due to a bar illegally over-serving someone, that alcohol provider needs to be held responsible for their actions, as well. Unfortunately, authorities sometimes overlook this possibility, which means it can slip through the cracks without more thorough independent investigations. So maybe alcohol wasn't a factor here, but even if it was, that doesn't necessarily mean authorities are getting the whole story.
