Commentary
The early hours and days following a crash are incredibly delicate, and it's crucial investigators work as soon as possible to preserve evidence. While people generally assume authorities have all that handled, they can come up short. I've found a few key questions, when asked early on, can help determine if authorities are taking things seriously.
Are investigators taking the time and using the right tools to fully analyze the crash? With details still emerging, it’s critical that authorities carefully document vehicle positions, road conditions, and other potential contributing factors. If they are prioritizing clearing the scene over gathering evidence, important details may be lost.
Are they considering whether a vehicle defect played a role? Mechanical failures—such as brake malfunctions, steering issues, or tire blowouts—could have contributed to the collision. Additionally, if seatbelts or airbags didn’t function properly, injuries may have been worse than necessary. Are investigators making sure the vehicles are thoroughly inspected before they are removed from the scene?
Are they securing all available electronic evidence? The vehicles’ Engine Control Modules (ECMs) may contain key data on speed, braking, and steering inputs before impact. GPS records, cellphone data, and nearby surveillance or traffic camera footage could provide critical insight into what happened. Are authorities taking steps to preserve this information before it’s lost?
If authorities can show that they're asking these same questions, it's a sign they're being thorough in their investigations. If not, that could be a sign their investigations alone won't be enough to get those involved the evidence they need going forward. That's when there may need to be a second set of eyes making sure nothing important slips through the cracks.
