Commentary
Something that I don't often see people talk about after crashes like this is the challenge of making sure all sides of the story are told fairly. If only one person is involved, and they're rushed to a hospital with serious injuries, authorities will have to make sure they gather as much evidence as possible in the absence of witness and victim statements.
Not every department is motivated or able to do this, though. Accident reconstruction is too often treated as a low priority. As such, even when authorities are motivated to do their jobs, they don't always have the tools, time, or experience needed for investigating complex or unlikely possible contributing factors. That's when mistakes happen.
As such, there are three key questions that are helpful to keep in mind after a serious crash:
- Did authorities have the resources to fully investigate the crash?
- Did authorities examine the vehicle for potential defects?
- Have authorities preserved electronic data from the vehicle, cell phones, and nearby cameras?
These questions can help people gauge the efforts authorities are making. Either they'll have satisfactory answers that show they've done a good job, or they'll come up short and show that there may need to be a second set of eyes looking things over.
