Commentary by Attorney Michael Grossman
When crashes like this happen—especially head-on collisions on rural roads during peak traffic hours—it’s tempting to assume one driver simply drifted out of their lane. But in my experience, particularly when a fatality is involved and a vehicle catches fire, the key question isn’t just what happened, but why. To begin understanding the fatal crash on FM 2879 in Harrison County, three essential questions need to be asked.
First, did investigators conduct a comprehensive review of the road conditions and layout at the crash site? Roads like FM 2879 often lack center dividers and may feature narrow lanes, limited shoulders, or poor visibility due to hills or curves. Was the road surface in good condition? Were lane markings visible and properly maintained? These details can help determine whether a driver had enough time and space to stay within their lane—or whether the roadway itself contributed to the collision.
Second, has anyone examined the possibility of a mechanical failure in either vehicle? A sudden failure in the steering or suspension of the Ford Taurus, for example, could cause a vehicle to veer into oncoming traffic without warning. The fact that the vehicle caught fire raises additional concerns about the integrity of its fuel system or electrical components. A thorough forensic inspection of both vehicles is critical to uncover whether a malfunction played a role in the crash or in its severity.
Finally, has all relevant electronic data been gathered and reviewed? Both the Ford Fusion and Ford Taurus are likely equipped with event data recorders that log speed, braking, throttle input, and steering activity in the moments before impact. That information can help determine whether evasive maneuvers were attempted, whether the vehicles responded as expected, and whether either vehicle was already out of control before the crash occurred. Investigators should also look for GPS data, dashcam footage, or nearby surveillance that could provide a clearer picture of the events leading up to the impact.
Answering these three questions is critical to making sure that no stone is left unturned in understanding the causes of a crash like this. Serious wrecks deserve serious investigation, not assumptions. Getting clear answers to these questions is crucial for those seeking to understand what happened and why—and it's the least that can be done to help those affected find the clarity and closure they deserve.
