Commentary by Attorney Michael Grossman
High-speed crashes like this raise questions that can’t be answered just by looking at the aftermath. When a vehicle leaves the road, rolls, and catches fire, there’s often more at play than simple driver error, and a closer look is needed to understand why it happened.
1. Did the authorities thoroughly investigate the crash?
A full review of the scene should include tire marks, fence impact points, and roadway conditions to determine how the Dodge lost control. Speed may be a factor, but investigators also need to consider whether other elements, such as another vehicle’s actions or sudden obstacles, played a role. Without that analysis, key details about how this crash unfolded may never be known.
2. Has anyone looked into the possibility that a vehicle defect caused the crash?
At high speeds, even a small mechanical failure can turn catastrophic. Issues with steering, brakes, or tires could explain the sudden loss of control. Additionally, if a vehicle catches fire after a rollover, that could point to a fuel system or electrical fault. Unless experts examine the Charger closely, these possibilities remain unanswered.
3. Has all the electronic data relating to the crash been collected?
Modern vehicles store critical information in onboard recorders, including speed, braking, and steering activity in the moments before a crash. This data, along with any dashcam or surveillance footage nearby, can help determine whether driver input alone explains what happened—or if something unexpected contributed to the loss of control.
Accidents like this aren’t just about what was visible when crews arrived. A thorough investigation digs into the unseen causes, helping reveal whether this was a preventable incident or one tied to deeper issues.
Takeaways:
- A complete scene reconstruction is essential to understand how the vehicle lost control.
- Vehicle fires after a crash can indicate possible design or mechanical defects.
- Electronic data can clarify what actions were taken—or not taken—in the moments leading up to the collision.
