Commentary by Attorney Michael Grossman
When a vehicle flips and is then struck multiple times—ultimately catching fire—the stakes are too high to settle for guesses. Crashes like this unfold in layers, and each stage needs to be unraveled to understand what really happened.
1. Did the authorities thoroughly investigate the crash?
An overturned vehicle hit twice by oncoming traffic requires more than routine reporting. Did investigators analyze the rollover’s origin—whether it was caused by evasive movement, speed, or external conditions? Were the subsequent impacts mapped to understand how the second and third vehicles became involved? A multi-phase crash like this demands careful reconstruction from start to finish. Without it, the full chain of events may never be understood.
2. Has anyone looked into the possibility that a vehicle defect caused the crash?
A rollover that begins with a loss of control raises immediate questions about the vehicle itself. A mechanical issue—such as a suspension failure, faulty tire, or malfunctioning stability system—could be at the root. If the vehicle caught fire after the collisions, that adds further concern about possible fuel system or battery issues. Only a thorough inspection can determine whether the crash was triggered or worsened by equipment failure.
3. Has all the electronic data relating to the crash been collected?
The vehicle likely contains critical data on speed, steering angle, and braking efforts in the moments before the rollover. That information can help show whether the driver attempted to regain control or if the vehicle behaved erratically. Additional data from the two other vehicles involved could also help clarify timing and visibility. Investigators should also check for highway cameras or nearby surveillance to support their findings.
The sequence of events here is complex—but complexity is no excuse for incomplete answers. Each collision, each reaction, each system failure (or success) deserves to be part of the story.
Takeaways:
- Multi-impact crashes must be reconstructed step-by-step to uncover root causes.
- Rollover and fire risks point to the need for full mechanical and safety system reviews.
- Vehicle data and camera footage are critical to understanding how this crash unfolded.
