Commentary by Attorney Michael Grossman
Rollover crashes don’t just happen out of nowhere. When a vehicle flips without a collision or outside interference, the focus must shift to what happened before the moment of impact—and whether anyone is asking the right questions to uncover it.
Did the authorities thoroughly investigate the crash?
It’s not enough to note that a vehicle rolled. The real work begins with understanding how and why. Did investigators analyze tire marks, steering inputs, and vehicle trajectory? Was there an effort to reconstruct the sequence that led to the loss of control? Without that level of detail, it’s impossible to say whether driver input, environmental conditions, or something deeper played a role.
Has anyone looked into the possibility that a vehicle defect caused the crash?
Rollovers without clear cause often suggest that something inside the vehicle may have gone wrong. A failure in suspension, steering, or even an electronic stability system could explain the sudden loss of control. These aren’t always visible from the wreckage. A full mechanical inspection is necessary—especially when the driver isn’t sure what went wrong.
Has all the electronic data relating to the crash been collected?
Modern vehicles often record key metrics like speed, steering angles, and braking force in the seconds before a crash. That data can help confirm or challenge assumptions about what caused the rollover. If GPS logs, phone data, or dash cam footage exist, they can also help clarify the timeline. But this type of information can be lost quickly if not preserved early in the investigation.
In crashes like this, assumptions are the enemy of truth. Only by digging deeper—into both the vehicle and the data—can we begin to understand what really happened.
Key Takeaways:
- Onboard vehicle data could provide essential insight into the vehicle’s behavior.
- A full reconstruction is needed to determine what triggered the rollover.
- Mechanical issues such as steering or suspension failure should be thoroughly inspected.
