Commentary
After any serious crash, as this one seems to be, getting to the truth means more than just reading an initial report. To make sure all the facts are brought to light, it can help to consider three basic—but critical—questions:
- Did authorities fully investigate the crash, including scene measurements and witness interviews?
- Were the vehicles checked for mechanical issues that could have played a role?
- Was electronic data from the vehicles preserved before it could be lost or overwritten?
Each of these steps can make the difference between an informed understanding of what happened and a rush to judgment based on assumptions. That can be crucial for ensuring victims and families get a conclusion that's best for them.
