Commentary by Attorney Michael Grossman
With a single-vehicle wreck, one of the most surprising things for people to deal with is the fact they're not often taken seriously. The reality is a lot of police departments end up treating them as a low priority. Even when there's an experienced officer in charge of the investigations, they may not have access to the right tools, or they may be rushed to move on to other responsibilities too soon.
This is when complex details slip through the cracks, like in a case I handled not long ago where someone had a defective seatbelt. The police report ended up blaming the victim and said they weren't wearing one. It was only because the family found that unusual that they sought out a second opinion, and we were able to set the record straight. Maybe nothing like that happened here, but it's a reason why initial details are best taken with a grain of salt. There could always be more to the story.
