These are obviously concerning preliminary details. Not having properly working taillights on a dark interstate is more or less begging for a crash like this to happen. But even if that's what happened here, there could be more to the story. After all, it's not just about knowing "what" caused a crash; it's also about "why" that thing happened.
For example, let's say that broken or deactivated taillights led to this crash. Was the truck not being maintained properly? Did the driver not do their normal pre-trip check? Are they an inexperienced driver that a negligent employer put behind the wheel? Was the driver fatigued and not making rational decisions? Has the driver or their employer been responsible for other serious accidents?
I've handled hundreds of commercial vehicle accident cases. More often than not, there isn't a single mistake leading to a serious crash. It's far more often the result of a series of mistakes that made the crash inevitable. If multiple parties made mistakes, they all need to be held accountable—both for the sake of the family they harmed and for the sake of the general public they might go on to harm if they're not put on the straight-and-narrow.
So while it seems like authorities might have an idea of what went wrong here, there could be a whole lot more to the story that has yet to be addressed.
