Commentary by Attorney Michael Grossman
A midday rollover on the highway raises important questions—especially when no other vehicle is involved. It’s moments like these that demand more than a passing glance. A single-car crash might look straightforward, but it rarely is.
1. Did the authorities thoroughly investigate the crash?
An overturned SUV on a wide-open highway should prompt more than a quick report. Investigators ought to analyze the scene for skid marks, map the rollover sequence, and determine if the vehicle veered gradually or abruptly. Did they examine potential pre-crash actions by the driver? Did they consider whether mechanical failure or external forces played a role? The answer depends heavily on who was called to the scene and how much time and expertise they brought with them.
2. Has anyone looked into the possibility that a vehicle defect caused the crash?
A rollover without obvious provocation demands a mechanical inspection. The Ford Edge, like many SUVs, has a higher center of gravity, making it more sensitive to things like sudden steering input or tire blowouts. If a tire failed, if the suspension was compromised, or if a steering issue arose, any of those could have led to a loss of control. These possibilities can’t be ruled out just by looking at the wreckage—they require a focused mechanical review.
3. Has all the electronic data relating to the crash been collected?
The vehicle’s event data recorder could reveal a wealth of information—speed, steering angle, braking, and more. That data might show whether the vehicle reacted as expected or if something went wrong. If a phone or GPS device was in use, it could add further context—especially regarding distraction or navigation input. But that evidence doesn’t last forever. If no one secured it promptly, it may already be lost.
When a crash ends with a serious injury and no clear reason, the job isn’t to assume—it’s to investigate. Because the truth doesn't always sit on the surface, and it won't reveal itself without pressure.
- Rollover crashes demand careful scene analysis, not quick assumptions.
- Mechanical failures in SUVs can cause loss of control with little warning.
- Digital crash data offers key insight—but only if someone collects it.
