Single-vehicle accidents are often a lot more complex than people may think. I get calls all the time from folks who feel authorities never bothered getting the whole story or were more focused on blaming someone than actually gathering evidence. Unfortunately, not all departments prioritize accident reconstruction, so it can take key questions to find out how thorough authorities have been and see if investigations were handled properly.
First, were authorities given the time, tools, and training needed to properly investigate the crash? When officers are stretched thin or lack the equipment to reconstruct a complex accident, they may move on before gathering all the evidence or jump to conclusions without piecing everything together. Did they thoroughly examine the scene for tire marks, debris, or road hazards? Were environmental conditions like lighting, weather, and road design evaluated? Without proper resources and time, critical details can easily be missed.
Second, could a vehicle defect have contributed to the crash? Mechanical failures, like brake or steering malfunctions, are known causes of accidents. Similarly, failures in safety equipment, such as seatbelts or airbags, can make a crash far worse. A forensic inspection of the vehicle is essential to identify and preserve evidence of any potential defects.
Finally, was all electronic evidence collected and reviewed? Modern vehicles store crucial data in their Engine Control Modules (ECMs), such as speed, braking, and steering inputs before the crash. Additional sources like cellphone records, GPS logs, or video footage from nearby cameras may provide vital context. Acting quickly to secure this evidence is essential to avoid losing valuable insights.
If authorities can respond to these sorts of questions with sensible, satisfying answers, it's likely a sign their investigations were good and thorough. But if their responses fall short and leave people with doubts, it can be a sign that the crash needs another set of eyes looking things over. In my experience, this can be a good approach for ensuring no important details fall through the cracks.
