Commentary
One of the main challenges with commercial vehicle accidents is the crash scenes can be very chaotic. Not only do the larger vehicles require special tools and training to properly analyze (for defects or electronic data, for example), but also the involvement of a commercial interest raises extra hurdles for investigators. On top of that, if a victim is seriously injured, they may not get to immediately tell their side of the story. Naturally, this concerns people who want to ensure their side is represented fairly. That's why independent investigations are often a prudent approach for any commercial truck wreck.
Simply put, it can be reassuring to victims and families not to have to simply wait around for authorities and rely solely on their efforts. They can have a second set of eyes with state-of-the-art tools and years of experience analyze the scene, the vehicles, and the surrounding evidence to ensure nothing important slips through the cracks. Sometimes, those efforts align with the authorities. Sometimes, it catches important details that slipped through the cracks. In my experience, victims and families just knowing that the investigations are in good hands can be a significant weight off their shoulders. I see no reason right now why this crash would be an exception to that.
