Commentary
One of my main concerns following any motorcycle wreck is whether or not steps are being taken to treat it fairly. The unfortunate reality is people can be quick to blame motorcyclists before they know any of the facts. Even authorities can fall into this trap. Ultimately, this can leave a victim's loved ones with serious doubts if they don't feel investigators fairly considered all possible contributing factors.
This is one of the reasons I've always talked about the value of independent accident reconstructions. When an investigation is handled by a dedicated, trained, well-equipped professional, they can help ensure even unlikely possible factors get attention. Did a tire blow out? Did the vehicle have a defect? Was there an issue with the roadway? Did visibility or issues with signage or lighting contribute to the accident?
Generally speaking, those are details preliminary police investigations tend to overlook. Sometimes, authorities keep digging to make sure a family's concerns and doubts are adequately addressed. Other times, they simply move on or jump to a conclusion, leaving families to look for answers on their own. Either way, it can be helpful for families to follow up with investigators and verify what steps they took to get evidence following the crash. That can help them gauge whether or not a crash would be better off getting a second look from experienced independent accident reconstructionists.
