Commentary
When it comes to an early morning single-vehicle accident like this, there's always a concern about how thorough investigations were. Put simply, authorities may put crashes like this low on their list of priorities, and that can leave officers without the time or tools they need to do the job properly. As a result, important evidence can easily slip through the cracks.
All kinds of factors can lead to a crash like this. Were there issues with the road? Did a tire blowout? Did the vehicle have some sort of defect? Was there a lack of signage or lighting that played a role? Was there another reckless driver who fled the scene? Likely or not, these things happen, and just assuming that driver error led to the crash only risks missing something important.
It would surprise folks how often I've had cases where we asked these questions, and authorities were all but empty-handed. It then would take more thorough independent investigations to fill in the blanks. However, there are times authorities have thorough and satisfactory answers for families, and that happens when they actually give a crash the attention it deserves. Whether or not they made that effort here remains to be seen.
