Commentary by Attorney Michael Grossman
It stands out to me that only one person was reportedly injured here. Not just that, but they were apparently seriously injured. That may not stand out to most people, but experience has shown me this can occasionally be a sign something was wrong with the vehicle the victim was in.
Generally speaking, people in similar vehicles in the same crash will have comparable injuries. There can be exceptions to this, of course, depending on what physically happened in the crash. But it should be a clear sign to authorities to examine safety features like the victim's seat belt or airbag. If something failed to prevent serious injuries, then the victim may have been harmed due to a defect rather than the crash itself.
Common or not, these are things which need attention, otherwise something crucial could slip through the cracks. If nothing else, those affected by a crash deserve to know they're getting the whole story.
