Commentary
Single-vehicle accidents often don’t get the level of scrutiny they deserve. Without a thorough investigation, key details can go unnoticed, or authorities could get tunnel vision on one factor, causing them to miss another, more significant one. That’s why it’s important to consider a few key factors.
Did authorities have the time, tools, and training to fully investigate? Officers may not always have the resources for an in-depth crash analysis, which can lead to assumptions rather than evidence-based conclusions. Were road conditions, visibility, and possible evasive maneuvers properly examined? If not, crucial details may have been missed.
Did they check for possible vehicle defects? Brake malfunctions, steering failures, or sudden mechanical issues could have contributed to the crash. Additionally, if seatbelts or airbags didn’t function properly, injuries could have been worse than they should have been. Was the vehicle inspected before critical evidence was lost?
Did they preserve all available electronic evidence? The vehicle’s Engine Control Module (ECM) may contain key data on speed, braking, and steering inputs before the crash. GPS records, cellphone data, or nearby surveillance footage could also provide valuable insights. Were investigators proactive in securing this information?
If authorities can provide clear, convincing answers to these kinds of questions, that's likely a sign they did good investigations. But if they can't provide a clear picture, it's possible their investigations weren't thorough, and there needs to be independent investigations to fill in the missing pieces.
