Delmi Martinez, Martin Sanchez, Jamaine Phillips, 1 Injured in Alleged Drunk Driver Accident in Houston, TX
Houston, TX — December 24, 2024, Delmi Martinez, Martin Sanchez, Jamaine Phillips, and another were injured in an alleged drunk driver accident on Little York Road.
Authorities said in their statements that the accident happened at around 12:26 a.m. in the area of the Little York Road and Airline Drive intersection.
According to officials, 39-year-old Delmi Martinez, 61-year-old Martin Sanchez, and Jamaine Phillips were in separate vehicles going along Little York. While doing so, an eastbound Nissan Murano reportedly failed to control speed, causing a multi-vehicle collision. Due to this, Delmi Martinez and the driver of the Nissan had reportedly serious injuries. Martin Sanchez and Jamaine Phillips had reportedly less severe injuries.
Right now, details allege that the Nissan Murano driver was under the influence of alcohol. It's unclear right now if charges were officially filed.
Commentary
If the allegations here are true, then it wouldn't surprise me to see the allegedly drunk driver face charges. Unfortunately, it would be more surprising to hear authorities were also looking into the possibility a local bar unlawfully over-served the driver. I've handled hundreds of cases against negligent alcohol providers who contributed to serious accidents. A lot of the time, they get to slip through the cracks unless the victims and families are demanding that they, too, face appropriate consequences.
Simply put, if a bar, restaurant, liquor store, or similar venue serves someone who is obviously intoxicated, they're break the rules. This can expose them to potential criminal investigations, fines, or liability for the injuries their actions contribute to. Not only does this give victims and families an opportunity to see wrongdoers held accountable, it often puts negligent alcohol providers on a path to clean up their act so their actions don't harm anyone else.
That's why important for folks to be proactive and understand what all authorities are looking into rather than just assuming they're considering the crash from all angles. Perhaps this all was just a reckless individual driver, or maybe there's an accomplice who has yet to be called out. At the end of the day, accountability requires evidence, and there isn't enough information here yet to say if authorities are investigating all of the evidence.
