Commentary by Attorney Michael Grossman
When accidents like this happen, people often assume they're caused by a simple mistake or a momentary lapse in judgment. However, crashes involving large vehicles like buses tend to have more complex causes that warrant a deeper investigation.
In a case like this, where a bus reportedly changed lanes at an unsafe time, it's important to consider several factors. Drivers of larger vehicles, such as buses, need to be especially cautious when merging or changing lanes due to the increased blind spots and the longer stopping distances these vehicles require. Investigators will need to determine whether the bus driver made an improper maneuver, or whether other factors such as road conditions or distractions played a role. It's equally important to assess whether there was sufficient space and time for the bus to safely attempt the lane change and if proper signaling was used.
Another aspect to consider in incidents like this is the possible responsibility of the bus company. If this was a commercial vehicle, the company could face scrutiny regarding how its drivers are trained and supervised. Companies are required to ensure that their drivers follow safety protocols and are adequately trained to handle challenging traffic conditions. A failure in these areas could indicate that the company bears some responsibility for the crash.
Ultimately, the goal is to uncover the truth and provide answers to those affected by the crash. Even if it requires conducting an independent investigation to obtain vital evidence, it is crucial to consider every factor to ensure that those impacted by the crash receive the clarity and closure they deserve.
