According to authorities, 30-year-old Dominikka Gearring was traveling in a southeast bound Chevrolet Malibu on Drew Street at the Louisiana Street intersection when the accident took place. Gearring reportedly received suspected serious injuries due to the wreck. Additional details pertaining to this incident are not available at this point in time.
Commentary by Attorney Michael Grossman
When a collision occurs in an intersection, especially one involving a side impact and significant injury, it's rarely enough to rely on assumptions about who had the right of way. These situations demand clarity—clarity that only comes from a full investigation into timing, behavior, and vehicle performance.
Did the authorities thoroughly investigate the crash?
At a minimum, determining fault in a T-bone crash requires knowing which vehicle had the right of way and whether either driver ignored a traffic signal or sign. But beyond that, did investigators document pre-impact vehicle positions, light cycle timing (if applicable), and any witness accounts? Too often, these critical details are left out or inconsistently collected, especially at night, when visibility and timing errors are more likely.
Has anyone looked into the possibility that a vehicle defect caused the crash?
If the Malibu struck the side of the Honda, it’s fair to ask whether either vehicle had a defect that contributed. Did the Honda accelerate slowly due to transmission issues? Was the Malibu’s braking system functioning properly? Side-impact crashes often lead to serious injuries, especially if airbag or side curtain systems fail to deploy. Without a detailed inspection, those factors might go unnoticed entirely.
Has all the electronic data relating to the crash been collected?
Modern vehicles can show exactly when drivers braked, steered, or accelerated in the moments before a collision. That information could confirm whether the Malibu driver attempted to stop or whether the Honda entered the intersection unexpectedly. If investigators haven’t secured this data from both vehicles, then the chain of events remains, at best, incomplete.
Intersections are places where seconds matter. A full accounting of what happened—down to the second—isn’t just useful. It’s necessary when someone walks away with serious injuries.
- Intersection crashes need precise reconstruction, not just assumptions based on position.
- Vehicle system malfunctions—like failed braking or slow acceleration—should be considered.
- Crash data can clarify who acted when, and whether there was time to avoid the impact.
