Commentary by Attorney Michael Grossman
When a crash ends in multiple fatalities, it’s easy to accept the outcome as final and the cause as unknowable. But that kind of thinking leaves too much unresolved. In cases where a vehicle veers off the road without warning, it’s not enough to guess—we need to know what went wrong and why.
1. Did the authorities thoroughly investigate the crash?
Losing control on a highway can have many causes, but sorting through them takes more than a quick review of tire tracks and debris. Did investigators take the time to reconstruct the crash with precision tools? Was the vehicle’s path fully mapped, or the driver’s pre-crash behavior considered? The reality is, not all crash scenes are handled with equal scrutiny, and the level of detail can depend entirely on the training and experience of the responding officers. If the work wasn’t done methodically, key answers may already be lost.
2. Has anyone looked into the possibility that a vehicle defect caused the crash?
A sudden loss of control should always raise questions about the vehicle itself. Did the Chevy Colorado experience brake failure, steering lock-up, or even a suspension failure that made the vehicle unstable? These issues might not show up on a surface-level inspection—they require a hands-on, expert mechanical review. Without that, there’s no way to rule out a defect, and doing so without checking leaves too many possibilities on the table.
3. Has all the electronic data relating to the crash been collected?
This vehicle likely held key data that could show what was happening in the seconds before the crash—speed, braking, steering inputs, and system alerts. If retrieved, this information could help explain whether the driver tried to correct course, whether a system malfunction occurred, or if another factor triggered the crash. But this data isn’t permanent—it must be captured before it’s lost or overwritten.
In a crash this severe, every detail matters. And until someone asks the right questions and follows the evidence wherever it leads, there’s no way to know the full story—or prevent the next one.
Key Takeaways:
- Vehicle data may hold the clearest answers, but only if it's retrieved in time.
- Thorough investigation is critical when a vehicle leaves the road without warning.
- Mechanical defects must be ruled out through detailed inspection, not assumption.
