Commentary by Attorney Michael Grossman
One of the challenges with residential fires is people can be too quick to just blame the resident. However, a proper investigation needs to include possibilities residents can't always control—even unlikely ones.
There may have been a botched installation or repair job. There may have been a gas leak. This may be a rental property that wasn't being maintained properly. An appliance in the home may have had an unforeseeable manufacturing issue.
If these things aren't being ruled out, then evidence may slip through the cracks. That's why it's important these incidents are handled by professionals who will cover all the bases and ensure not important details go unchecked.
