Commentary by Michael Grossman
There's not much information about this crash available right now, and it's important to know how investigations are being handled. Anytime I get a serious car accident across my desk, I consider three questions:
- Are authorities dedicating the time, tools, and effort needed to get all the facts?
- Are the vehicles being inspected for potential defects?
- Is electronic data being preserved (vehicle data, cellphones, video, etc.)?
In my experience, if authorities have satisfactory answers to these questions, they're likely doing good investigations. If their responses fall short, though, it may be necessary to have independent investigators step in and pick up the slack.
