Child Killed, 2 Injured in Gas Line Explosion Accident in Lexington, MO
Lexington, MO — April 9, 2025, a child was killed and a man and a girl were injured following a gas explosion that happened at 7:45 p.m. near 18th Street.
Initial details about the accident have been released concerning the timeline leading up to the explosion.

Right now, investigations say that fiber lines were being installed, and at some point, it was reported that a gas line was leaking or damaged. Later, utility workers say they surveyed the area and did not find signs of a gas leak. This all happened between 4:00 p.m. and 7:45 p.m., which is when an explosion occurred. The current reported cause of the explosion is natural gas.
Due to the explosion, a 5-year-old boy that lived at the home nearest the reported leak was killed. The boy's father and sister both sustained burn injuries. No other injuries were reported. Investigations are ongoing at this time.
Commentary by Attorney Michael Grossman
The reporting on this is still chaotic right now as there seems to be some back and forth about whether or not companies used the proper procedure for checking for utility lines before digging and whether or not they followed procedure for addressing issues that come up, such as a ruptured gas line. Clearly, someone failed somewhere along the way. Whether that was the crew who was digging, whoever did or didn't mark the utilities properly, or the energy company for failing to address what was apparently a deadly gas leak. Ultimately, it's going to take significant investigations into every entity whose hands touched this project to find out who allowed this to happen so the family can finally have some answers and see accountability.
