Commentary
It's possible authorities only brought up alcohol here because it's standard procedure for them to look into it after serious accidents. If it was a factor, though, their efforts may need to extend beyond the crash scene itself. This is due to the fact many drunk driving accidents involve negligent alcohol providers who may also be responsible for the accident.
Simply put, it's unlawful in Texas for bars, restaurants, and other establishments to over-serve people who are obviously intoxicated. Doing so means those alcohol providers can be held accountable for contributing to accidents resulting from that intoxication. This both allows victims and families to ensure there are consequences for those who wronged them as well puts those negligent establishments on a path to clean up their act.
Again, maybe nothing like that happened here. It's just that folks have a tendency to assume authorities are always exhaustive in their investigations. In reality, they sometimes overlook details that aren't immediate obvious at the crash scene. That might be useful to keep in mind as investigations proceed here.
