Commentary
I get calls about single-vehicle accidents all the time, and people generally have the same concerns. They want to be sure their side of the story is represented fairly. Authorities don't always do that, which is why it can be helpful to consider some key questions early on in the investigations.
1. Did the authorities have the time, training, and equipment to fully investigate the crash?
When there’s only one vehicle involved, some crash scenes don’t get the detailed attention they deserve. Officers might be limited by time, resources, or simply the assumption that the cause is clear. But unless the scene is properly documented—looking at vehicle position, road markings, and signs of last-second maneuvers—it’s easy for important clues to be missed or misread.
2. Has anyone looked into the possibility that a vehicle defect caused or worsened the crash?
Losing control and rolling over isn’t always a matter of driver error. Mechanical issues—like brake failure, steering problems, or a malfunction in the vehicle’s stability systems—could have played a role. It’s also worth verifying whether safety systems like seatbelts and airbags worked as they should. When they don’t, injuries can be far more severe than they had to be.
3. Has all the electronic data, cell phone records, and nearby camera footage been collected?
Most modern vehicles track key data in the seconds before a crash—speed, braking, and steering input. That information can clarify whether the vehicle behaved as expected. Phone records can help establish timing, and nearby homes or businesses might have cameras that caught the incident or vehicle movement before the crash. These details often fill in gaps that the physical evidence can’t explain.
If authorities don't have satisfactory answers to these questions, it may be a sign that they're not really giving a crash the attention it deserves. That can be an opportunity to have a second set of eyes look things over so that the evidence is ultimately able to speak for itself.
Takeaways:
- Single-vehicle crashes don’t always get the investigative attention they need.
- Vehicle or safety system failures may have contributed to the incident or injuries.
- Electronic data, phone records, and area footage can reveal key facts that might otherwise be missed.
