Commentary by Attorney Michael Grossman
Plenty of the hundreds of commercial vehicle accident cases I've handled involved multiple trucks. They're about as complex as an investigation can get. People might think these are just big car accidents, but that's not really true. It's important authorities have the tools and experience to handle the situation, otherwise they might miss crucial details.
For example, are authorities working to secure electric data from the trucks? Are they going to analyze the trucks for potential defects? Do they have the tools to determine if the resulting fire was a natural result of the collision or the result of a manufacturing issue? Are they examining road design and condition? Are they pulling driver hours of service logs? Looking into training and working conditions? Were there any other reckless drivers involved who set all of this into motion?
Likely or not, these are the kinds of questions I generally expect to see answered in proper accident reconstructions. Sometimes, authorities have the means to answer those questions. Other times, their efforts only really scratch the surface. At the end of the day, the burden often falls to victims and families to decide if their concerns are being adequately addressed. If they aren't, then there may need to be a second set of eyes looking things over.
