Commentary by Attorney Michael Grossman
There isn't a lot of information available about this crash right now. Like any serious accident, though, it's important to know what steps investigators are taking. It can surprise people when a commercial truck wreck receives about as much attention as a typical car accident. Over the years, I've worked with countless families who found that authorities did their investigations only to come up more or less empty-handed.
This is why it can be helpful to ask questions early on. Are authorities looking at road conditions? Is there video of the accident that needs to be secured? Have officials pulled cellphone and vehicle data? Did they speak to independent witnesses? Do officers have the proper tools and training for a complex commercial vehicle accident? Is their attention divided between other jobs? Is evidence being safely secured for independent inspection, or did the trucking company drive their vehicle away from the scene unchecked?
In my experience, these are the sorts of questions which can show a family if their situation is being treated as a high priority or being brushed aside and mishandled. If explanations aren't adding up, or if authorities leave unanswered questions, steps can be taken to bring in independent investigators who can fill in the gaps. Regardless of what happened here, it should be a priority to ensure those affected get clear answers.
