Commentary by Attorney Michael Grossman
A concern I have after any serious motorcycle wreck is whether or not authorities are being fair in their investigations. Simply put, a lot of people have an unfair negative bias against motorcyclists. Authorities are not immune to this. Sometimes, officers aren't able to set aside this bias, so they end up jumping to conclusions rather than letting the evidence speak for itself. Without more experience investigators to set the record straight, important details can slip through the cracks.
Did a tire blow out? Were there objects in the road? Did the victim experience a medical emergency? Are there issues with signage or lighting in this area? Was there another vehicle involved that left the scene? Did any nearby businesses or residences catch the accident on a security camera? Did the vehicle have any defects?
These are the kinds of questions I expect answers to following efforts from independent accident reconstructionists. They have years of experience and state-of-the-art tools to ensure the facts speak for themselves. But when a serious crash is left solely up to the authorities, these kinds of answers can't be taken for granted. Perhaps authorities here have been more thorough, but that remains to be seen.
