Commentary by Attorney Michael Grossman
People often see reports with a person clearly being put at fault and they think that's where things end. However, there could be other complex factors surrounding this accident that need to be addressed. After all, getting a proper resolution requires learning not just what caused a crash but why it happened.
Was the truck driver speeding? Were they on their phone? Was this a work vehicle that wasn't being maintained properly? Was the driver being pressured to meet unreasonable deadlines by his employer? Has the vehicle been inspected for potential defects? Have authorities tested for drugs and alcohol?
If authorities aren't taking steps to dig into even unlikely possible factors, they're bound to miss something important. That's why people often reasonably want independent investigators looking things over to help catch anything that might slip through the cracks.
